Does Anyone Know Your Website Exists?

You have created a wonderful website. You spent money on design and functionality. Now what do you do?

What you can’t do is build it and expect visitors to just come. You have to stay active on your end to ensure that your website works as much for you as much as you have worked on it.

In order to get traffic you need to market it offline and online. You have to make it easy to find.

Here are some basic ideas to help you in both regards:

  • Update your business cards to include your web address and email address.
  • Put the web address on your company cars and/or personal car.
  • Put your web address in all of your print advertising.
  • Put out a press release about your web address.
  • If you use articles for marketing be sure to include your web address in the articles.
  • Exchange links with other relevant websites
  • Get your website on all of the association directories you belong to.
  • Start an e-newsletter and use it to drive traffic to your website
  • Start a blog to attract visitors and leverage the search engines
  • Make sure the website is worth visiting, serve the visitors needs

I know some of these sound pretty basic but is amazing how many times we overlook the basic for the flashy.

    These are some great simple tips that can really work. However, if you were to re-arrange the ideas in order of importance or impact, perhaps those listed at the bottom belong on top. Especially the 9th point: “Start a blog to attract visitors and leverage the search engines.”

    I agree with EJMalyn - sometimes the flashy sites are slow and it’s all just a bit too much with lots going on that becomes distracting and makes it difficult to navigate the site. Very nice suggestions. . .

    These simple techniques are great, but I think we are missing the all important search engine optimization (SEO). With all the buzz about SEO, it may seem to be just that - buzz. But, it is actually very important to optimize your site with keywords, check navigation patterns, and update content to ensure your site is being pinged by search engines.
